SDG 5 : Gender Equality

SDG 5, "Gender Equality," is to end the discrimination, violence and harmful practices against women and girls. It aims to achieve gender equality among women and girls which can promote equal participation and opportunities in all aspects of life.

In areas where women are underrepresented, UNIMAS encourages female involvement through working with a variety of stakeholders. In an effort to foster an open and supportive academic environment for female students and staff, UNIMAS also actively tracks the advancement of women.

Lessons in Perseverance: How One Educator Transformed Lives and Fought for Equality

In conjunction with Women’s Day, UNIMAS highlighted efforts to encourage women in underrepresented fields, particularly STEM. Through mentorship, scholarships, and inclusive teaching approaches, female educators and role models empower young women to overcome barriers and pursue their ambitions confidently. The article showcases how guidance, skill development programs, and supportive policies can help women break stereotypes, gain access to education and career opportunities, and inspire the next generation. By promoting equality and empowerment, these initiatives contribute to increased female participation in fields where women are traditionally underrepresented.

STEM ConnectHER 2024: Building Confidence and Essential Soft Skills for Women in STEM

UNIMAS demonstrates its commitment to empowering women in underrepresented STEM fields through educational and career-oriented initiatives that encourage female participation and leadership.

The STEM ConnectHER 2024 Speaker Series, organized by FCSIT UNIMAS in collaboration with The Asia Foundation, was designed specifically for third- and final-year female students preparing for internships or careers in STEM. This event provided participants with career guidance, networking opportunities, and motivational insights from experienced professionals, fostering confidence and readiness among women to pursue STEM careers.

UNIMAS Empowers Women in Entrepreneurship

UNIMAS continues to promote women’s empowerment by encouraging their participation in entrepreneurship and technical fields traditionally dominated by men.

In collaboration with the Persatuan Ahli Teknologi dan Juruteknik Sarawak (APTT), UNIMAS organized a natural soap-making and digital marketing training programme for housewives in Sri Aman. The initiative aimed to equip women with green engineering and digital marketing skills, helping them start home-based businesses and achieve financial independence. Supported by the Ministry of Women, Community, and Family Development, the programme reflects UNIMAS’s dedication to fostering sustainable, inclusive economic growth through women’s active involvement.
