Support of Arts and Heritage
UNIMAS provides public access to several of its facilities, ensuring that both university members and the external community can benefit from its educational, cultural, and recreational resources.
- Libraries: The main library, CAIS, allows external communities to apply for external membership, as stated on the PeTARY UNIMAS
- Sports Facilities: The UNIMAS Sports Centre offers services to both the university community and the local community, including use of sports facilities by arrangement UNIMAS Sport Facilities
- Museums: Facilities like the Anatomy and Pathology Museum have been opened for external educational visits, such as those for students from other institutions, with prior arrangements Anatomy and Pathology Museum
Public Access to Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub (PeTARY)
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is gearing up for the much-anticipated PeTARY Open Day 2024, which will take place from 4 to 6 December 2024. This event aims to provide public access to university facilities and activities, offering a vibrant platform for learning, exploration, and community engagement.
The three-day program will feature various activities designed to share knowledge, foster connections, and showcase opportunities available through PeTARY. It invites students, staff, and the public to discover more about the initiatives and innovations happening within UNIMAS.\

UNIMAS Anatomy and Pathology Museum Welcomes ILKKM Kuching Students
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) continues to demonstrate its openness in providing access to academic facilities and university museums for external visitors through educational visits and collaboration activities.
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UNIMAS, welcomed 194 students and 8 faculty members from the Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (ILKKM) Kuching on June 10–11, 2024. The visitors, who were pursuing Diplomas in Nursing, Medical and Health Sciences, and Medical Laboratory Technology, had the opportunity to tour the Clinical Simulation Centre and the Anatomy and Pathology Museum. This visit offered valuable exposure to real academic and medical learning environments while fostering stronger collaboration between institutions. The initiative reflects UNIMAS’s commitment to promoting educational engagement and ensuring public access to its museum facilities.

Landscape and green spaces in universities are essential for enhancing the overall campus environment, supporting student well-being, and facilitating outdoor learning and relaxation. UNIMAS is surrounds with greenery, soft and hard landscape around the campus. UNIMAS is also equips with facilities for outdoor activities that benefits its community. All of these are also freely accessible for the public.

UNIMAS Showcases Borneo’s Cultural Heritage Through Art and Performance
UNIMAS continues to celebrate the richness of Borneo’s culture through the Borneo’s Culture & Ethnicity Showcase 2024, organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH) on 22 November 2024.
The event featured vibrant cultural performances, traditional dances, art exhibitions, and dialogue sessions led by local cultural associations. It served as a platform for students and the community to learn, share, and appreciate the unique traditions of Borneo’s ethnic groups. Through this showcase, UNIMAS demonstrated its active role in preserving cultural heritage and contributing to the development of local arts.

Preserving Sarawak’s Heritage through International Collaboration
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) continues to play an active role in preserving cultural heritage through its collaboration in the Singapore Cultural Diplomacy Project alongside the Sarawak Heritage Society (SaHS), Singapore Heritage Society (SiHS), and Singapore International Foundation (SIF). The partnership aims to document and protect Sarawak’s rich intangible cultural heritage, including traditions, folklore, and local knowledge.This 2.5-year initiative focuses on recording and archiving Sarawak’s diverse cultural identity through research, fieldwork, and interviews with local experts. By engaging in cultural documentation and cross-border knowledge exchange, the project supports the preservation of indigenous heritage while strengthening international collaboration between Sarawak and Singapore.

Sustainable Commuting in UNIMAS
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) continues to demonstrate its leadership in sustainability through its participation in the Sarawak Sustainability Insights Conference 2024. The university’s efforts are aligned with Sarawak’s Sustainability Blueprint, which focuses on transitioning towards a low-carbon economy and environmentally responsible practices.
Through its ongoing Low Carbon Campus initiative, UNIMAS promotes sustainable commuting, renewable energy adoption, and waste reduction on campus. These actions reflect the university’s strong commitment to fostering an eco-friendly academic environment and inspiring the community to support Sarawak’s green vision.

UNIMAS Launches Digital Experience Hub to Drive Inclusive Innovation
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) continues to drive digital innovation and flexibility in the workplace through the launch of the UNIMAS Digital Experience Hub, the first of its kind among Malaysian public universities. In collaboration with Google for Education, this initiative enhances digital learning and working environments, empowering both students and staff to adapt to modern, technology-driven practices.The Digital Experience Hub promotes a culture of digital readiness that supports remote teaching, online collaboration, and hybrid working arrangements. By expanding digital access and tools through initiatives such as the Grab-and-Go Chrome program, UNIMAS demonstrates its commitment to creating a flexible and inclusive environment that aligns with the growing trend of telecommuting and sustainable work practices.

Accommodations for UNIMAS Staff
UNIMAS also provides on-campus housing facilities for employees who have remote working hours that require employees to work outside the stipulated working hours. This objects to facilitate the movement of staff to perform their duties more effectively particularly involving technical and safety workers.
Affordable Residential Colleges for Students in UNIMAS
There are 10 Residential Colleges in the UNIMAS. They are named based on the rich biodiversity of the plants in Malaysia. In UNIMAS, the fee for accomodation is as low as RM3/day per person (sharing room). Apart from providing affordable student accommodation, Residential Colleges also provide a selection of spaces and facilities that can be used for a variety of reasons, including student activities, event/program organizing and many more. In the residential college also provides services that provide facilities to students such as cafeteria, self -service laundry, and place for prayer for Muslim students, student lounge, free Wi-Fi and more. Each college is also managed by college employees who provide 24 -hour services to students in need.

Provision of Pedestrian Pathway and Bicycle Lane Around Campus
UNIMAS promotes sustainable commuting by providing pedestrian-friendly pathways, bike lanes, and bike racks, encouraging walking and cycling around the campus. Covered pathways are also provided along the way from the residential college to the lecture hall

UNIMAS collaborates with local authorities to address planning and development issues by participating in urban planning initiatives and conducting research to inform policy decisions. Collaborations entails mediums such as dialogue and sharing expertise with local government especially in housing needs and sustainable development. As a community-driven university, UNIMAS also strive to foster community engagement with the locals, through public forums and workshops involving public in development processes.Sarawak Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Roadmap Workshop
URBANICE Malaysia organized the Sarawak Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Roadmap Workshop in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government (MPHLG) Sarawak and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). It took place on the 27th and 28th of July 2022 at the Raia Convention Hotel in Kuching. The workshops bring together all local governments in Sarawak to interact, exchange ideas, and plan for Sarawak's sustainable future.![]()
