SDG 13 : Climate Action
SDG 13 “climate action” strives for rapid response to fight climate change and its impact. It focuses extreme value on increasing resilience, combining policy with climate action, and increasing public knowledge of climate challenges
UNIMAS prioritizes low-carbon energy use, seeking energy-efficient solutions and renewable energy sources to minimize its carbon usage. UNIMAS places a strong emphasis on environmental education, raising awareness and sharing knowledge about climate change and sustainable practices within campus and outside campus. UNIMAS has dedicated to becoming a carbon-neutral university, actively working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and offsetting its carbon impact through sustainable initiatives.

Short-Term Mobility Programme : Net Zero Hero
UNIMAS offers Short-Term Mobility programmes for students, to help enhance students’ learning experience by exposing them to the cultural, economic, political, educational and ecological aspects of other countries. One of the short courses provided by UNIMAS is Net Zero Hero course. This is an internationally recognised programmes which cements UNIMAS imprint on the global stage as a community driven university for a sustainable world.
University Visit for Green Technology & Innovation Program Discussion
We were pleased to host a visit from industry partners from Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) on 23rd February 2023. In line with their initiative for Green Innovation Acceleration program, the discussion was held at the UNIMAS Innovation Technology Hub. We showcased various green technologies and outputs which we think would mutually benefit MGTC and UNIMAS.
We look forward to working closely towards commercialisation and research funding.
In attendance of the meeting were Prof Dr Wang Yin Chai, Prof Dr Mohd Azlan Jayasilan, Prof Dr Indraneil Das, Prof. Dr Shanti, AP Dr Norhuzaimin, and several researchers from IBEC and FENG.
Smart and Sustainable: BDA's Vision for a Low-Carbon Bintulu
The Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) is taking a significant step towards sustainability by developing its Strategic Plan 2024-2030. This plan focuses on transforming Bintulu into a low-carbon industrial hub.
The initiative began in May 2023 with town hall meetings and stakeholder engagement sessions. The project, titled "TOWARDS A LOW CARBON INDUSTRIAL HUB," aims to achieve multiple goals, including reducing carbon emissions in the industrial sector, improving air quality, and fostering environmental sustainability in Bintulu. The plan also includes broader objectives such as building an innovative and livable city, strengthening governance, and achieving financial resilience.
The BDA is committed to long-term success. This project will continuously implement and monitor low-carbon initiatives while deploying intelligent technologies and expanding the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance city services and improve efficiency by 2030.
Learning and Living Smarter: ISuRE-Kiwitech Partnership Transforms Campus
ISuRE has joined forces with Kiwitech Company to collaborate towards a more innovative and sustainable campus. The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), focuses on integrating innovative technologies using Kiwitech's Trustprime Excalsia platform.
This collaboration involves several vital initiatives: integrating smart technology (IoT sensors) with Kiwitech's Trustprime Excalsia platform across the campus, securing a joint grant of RM 20,000 for a power factor correction system to improve energy efficiency at The CUBE building, developing a training module on Smart City Technology, and jointly proposing a smart and low carbon city platform for the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA).
ISuRE and Kiwitech's collaboration on the Professional Certificate in Smart City module development with UBS has laid the groundwork for a broader vision of campus sustainability. This vision includes not only improved efficiency and sustainability on campus but also the development of a framework for a smart and low-carbon city. Upon this initial success, the project plans to expand innovative technology integration across campus, targeting a 20% reduction in energy consumption at the CUBE building through IoT optimization.

UNIMAS GHG Management and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)
On 8th November 2023, GHG Management and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) towards UNIMAS Low Carbon Campus workshop lead by Dr. Lidyana bt Roslan designed to educate individuals in each organization about greenhouse gases, their sources, and the methods to effectively track and manage them using dashboard software. The key topics covered in the workshop include understanding greenhouse gases and their sources, greenhouse gas inventory and data collection, compliance with reporting standards, using dashboard tools for data visualization, setting emission reduction goals, best practices for reducing emissions, and the importance of continuous improvement. Training participants gain the knowledge and skills needed to quantify, monitor, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions within their organizations, contributing to environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance. The training also includes that importance of GHG Management for ESG assessment and reporting. Participants are enlightened on the Sustainable Development Goals, 9R to improve UNIMAS sustainable goals in terms of Environment, Social and Governance.
